United Soccer Club is proud to present professional Brasilain star Julio Sergio Bertagnoli to Huntsville!
Júlio Sérgio Bertagnoli is a goalkeeper from Ribeirão Preto, Brasil. He has been playing professional soccer at the senior level since 1999 where he signed with the Brasilian Professional First Division club - Botafoga SP senior team after coming up through their youth program.
In 2002, the next big move in his career came, when he signed with the most storied professional Soccer Club in Brasilian history, Santos FC (the club where legendary Brasilian star of futebol - Pele is a hero). In 2002, he was the primary keeper, and under the leadership of legendary Brasilian goalkeeper, Coach Émerson Leão - Julio Sergio protected the net in a campaign that would see Santos win their first Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (Brasilian First Division Championship) in 34 years; making the team that boasted top Brasilian stars such as Robinho, Diego, Elano, Alex and Julio Sergio a part of Brasilian futbol history. In 2003 they were runner's up in the Brasilian Serie A, and in 2004 they repeated as Champions under the tutelage of world famous Brasilian Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo.
The next exciting move in Julio Sergio's career came when he signed a contract to move to Europe, where he played for Italian Serie A powerhouse, AS Roma. He gained tremendous experience at AS Roma playing with world stars such as Francesco Totti (C) (Ita), Daniele De Rossi (Ita), Christian Panucci (Ita) Philippe Mexes (Fra), and Cicinho (Bra). He also received top level instruction from world renown coaches such as Claudio Ranieri (who most recently led Leicester City to their first English Premier League Championship in Club History).
Probably the most historic moment in Julio Sergio's career came when Coach Ranieri named Julio the first choice keeper. He saved a key penalty from Sergio Floccari during the Rome derby against Lazio, which Roma ultimately won 2–1. Roma was losing 1–0 before the penalty, and Júlio Sérgio's save was defined by head coach Claudio Ranieri as the turning point of the game. On 31 May 2010, he signed a new contract with the club, keeping him in the capital until 2014.
His playing career honors include:
He returned to Brasil in 2014 to play one final season at Commercial FC in his hometown of Ribeirão Preto, Brasil. He then retired from playing and started his coaching career.
